how will the coolant vent the heat? great idea so far. reminds me of supercomputer architecture somewhat.(the old crays from the 80's)
the issue I'm trying to address is getting the heat out of aiko.
if it rains, an umbrella? personally, no matter how weatherproof, any outdoor robot i have comes in when it looks like rain, or i shove them in the shed if there's going to be a lot of rain, snow, or if the shed is more convenient.
look at the pictures of her, most of the joints are open, water will get in if it rains, whether the top of the head is sealed or using my cooling idea(not to say that will happen XD), water will still get in. the best thing to do would be to use weatherproof connectors in her. plus, my idea already seals the mainboard off, so only the servos, plugs, moving joints, wireless connection, and memory needs to be sealed off or weatherproofed, and then rain won't matter as much.

Yes heat, well I kind of see getting rid of it in two different ways.
Consider if you well a combination of things.
a)You can use regular motors, servos, controller boards, and CPU/motherboard which all put out a lot of heat and you have to build a bigger cooling system.
b)Or you could maybe use 3 or 4 motherboards to reduce CPU usage to 5% that would give off less heat, and smaller motors with gear to get better torque.
Ok to me servo’s don’t give off that much heat, but I don’t know how much heat a linear motor gives off or the kind of motors you use in your robots. There for I’m missing peaces to the puzzle so went with trying to cool down the CPU. By looking at the CPU I noticed the more processes you run on a single CPU the hotter it gets, but by dividing the processes up among a bunch of CPU’s and switching them you have less percentage of usage and less heat. So this is were the picture comes in, I think my mind decided that if it divided the processes up say hands on one CPU, feet on anther, legs and arms it could reduce heat by switching from one to the other. Plus it was trying to replace the hard drive with memory sticks to reduce heat as well. I think that’s where it was going.
To me I kind of think Aiko’s a work in progress; I thought if she was totally encapsulated in silicon you could easily clean her in the shower.

I remember when I first built my computer and it only had Windows XP and was running maybe 40 processes at 65 F. Now I have around 71 processes at 89 F along with virus protection.

considering how many semiconductors are in a chip, and that the number is growing, there is no way to efficiently get that heat away.
17 Pentium 4 chips(remember those?) will cook food. and thats without them being pushed to very much usage.
we should wait and see, as the graphene 1Thz(*drool*) chips are going to come out in the next 10 years, and they will need new cooling methods.
imagine that in a pc...

I remember Compaq’s pci boards merging with motherboards at least that’s what I sew when I worked for Comp-USA.
I read that processors today are reaching 4 GHz and with extreme cooling they might reach 6 GHz.
I looked up MIT unveils graphene chip capable of 1THz. is it me or are they trying to build a heat resistant chip out of carbon? Don’t get me wrong I think it’s great that they’re trying new materials other then silicon.
I think I’m going to make that radiator system and try it out on my Mini-ITX to see how much heat it will pull out. I’m not sure but I think my C7 1.5 GHz Mini-ITX runs cool then my 1.6 GHz AMD Athlon. I just need to find a pump, any ideas?

I would say yes for freezing the paper with LN2 I'm not sure about the LOX if it gets below -100 then I would say yes. Here I fould a alternitive to LN2.

How about this we take a brass tube fill it with dry ice only and have a copper tube rapped around it with several turns, we then insulate it with foam. We could take liquid coolant and pump it through the tubing to the CPU and back. What do you think about that idea?
Most of the linear motors that I’ve seen run at a maximum temperature of 90c, but I don’t know what a normal operating temperature is because I don’t have one to test. Would you happen to have any web site that I could look at for linear servo motors used in robots?

See what you think of this idea. I asked Le if he over clocked his CPU and he said it’s very hard to over clock a mobile computer, so I don’t believe he is over clocking. I figured I’d look into some dry ice cooling systems. So here’s the experiment.
a) Dry ice only no liquids because that’s how water bottles pop
b) 2 foam cup holders
c) ¼” 10 ft of copper refrigerant tubing
d) 3/8” 5ft copper refrigerant tubing
e) 1” x 4” long copper tube with caps
f) ½” cap for breather
g) 5ft ¼” vinyl tubing
h) CPU header
i) Pump
j) Some mesh screening to keep ice away from vent
k) 1 asparagus can
l) 1 survival wrap to keep ice cold
m) Computer antifreeze –139 degrees

I know dry ice explodes if you confine it in a container and add a liquid, but with the vent and no liquids it just might go from solid to gas and out the vent. I put the expansion tank on the outside so that it stays warm, I might be able to get away with just a hole in the foam top. The mesh screen is there to keep the ice from blocking the vent. I’ve seen survival wraps use to keep the ice longer. A liquid coolant could be pump through the tubing back and forth to the CPU. Ask your self how do they ship this stuff in containers with out it popping the container?

doesn't it sublime slowly? just like(i think, not sure) that it takes as much energy to melt a block of ice as it does to raise water by 80 degrees F. which is why they could ship natural ice blocks around the world before there was effective insulation or refrigeration.(off of a NOVA show, i think)
this is unlike liquid gasses, which are kept in Dewar Flasks that vent the pressure build up.

I got it from a gallon jug of round-up poison ivy killer. I never used the pump, I just poor it into a spray bottle.

looks useful for some other projects, and as it comes with the weed killer, (almost) free is good. i do need some of that poison at my house.

Reading through, looks like so many heat problems.
This could be good use for 100s of Thermocouple around and body to produce electricity. Possibly generated electricity use for cooling.
Give her a lung of heatsink to do water cooling around the body... well this would also make thermocouple more powerful by having a cool source and heat source. There ! more electricity for her plus kept cool. around 60 degree should be right with everything just to keep the thermo power running
Using mineral oil fill circuitry will absorb heat alot better than air(without shorting current ofc), not sure if you can filled her body with that oil stuff .... Doing this you can lower the profile of heatsink on chips and give more space head room for other things.

Hi, I've been trolling the boards a few days and finally decided to post.
I think the best way to avoid the heat issue(mostly), is to keep the cpu/motherboard out of the body.
If a computer is just set up as a(for lack of a better term) 'brain-server', then you can use standard desktop cooling equipment. Just have the body as a wired (or wifi) puppet for it to interact through.
I got the idea while multitasking. (browsing this forum, looking up info on Rovio(a wifi robot with webcam/mic/speakers, kinda looks like a DRD), and watching 'John Henry' epps on Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles)
I dont know if this is feasible with what you are building, but it just popped into my head and I thought it might help someone building something similar.
