Artificial muscle
It appears glitchy mechanical movement problems could be going away soon: Engadget: artificial muscle. Hopefully no more servos with stepper motors that jump into each position or hydraulics that can't really be accurately controlled and are prone to leaking.
Doesn't look like it can exert much force yet, but way better than anything I've seen before.

If nothing else
This could be useful for simulating facial expressions, which is something that I think would be very important.
